How to Read an IUL Illustration

Separate guaranteed values from hypothetical assumptions before comparing designs.

The planning principle

An illustration contains both guaranteed and non-guaranteed values. Compare funding assumptions, crediting assumptions, charges, death-benefit options, and lower-performance scenarios rather than focusing on one projected cash-value or income number.

What to review

Start with the financial objective, then compare contract provisions, affordability, guarantees, non-guaranteed elements where applicable, and the consequences of changing the plan later. Product availability and underwriting vary.
